black and white still works

by mari

Black and white toys for infants have had their highs and lows over the years, but this is a trend that deserves to be a staple. Research shows that early infants (0-3 or so) are most interested in high-contrasts, and in particular, the edges where black and white meet. By 3 or 4 months, bright colors will do the same thing. My 5 month old still loves to stare at my hairline! Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of hip black and white toys out there for young babies – and “toys” for a 2 month old don’t do much anyway! Wee Gallery is a great exception to the rule. They’ve got wonderful illustrations available as cards to set in the crib or as flashcards for older kids, as well as mobiles, artwork, and wall decals. Just remember, don’t put their mobile over the crib – black and white images are stimulating, not soothing!
