Stay Downtown Chic with your kids

by mari

One of the strangest things about this new way of working – working from home – is realizing just how much time I’m actually IN my home. Hours and hours and hours without end. Just me, Birdie, and George (our lovable mutt). It makes my big dream of the future perfect house even more poignant and intense. And I promise you that when that dream comes true – and it will dammit, it will – I will be carrying Downtown Chic around under one arm and waving it in my husband’s face. I’ll be wearing my glasses to simultaneously see all the purty details and appear even smarter while espousing our need for a room like this and that and the other. Every page of this book reminds me of the best parts of the best home tour magazine articles. The rooms are playful, imperfect, eclectic, colorful, unique, and so personal that they’re impossible to recreate. These are places where children and adults are both comfortable. Robert and Courtney Novogratz , of Sixx Design, spent years reinventing the derelict places they found lovable. In this book, they bring their wisdom and inspiration to the rest of us. Though I wouldn’t say this is a how-to guide, it definitely has enough practical tidbits in it to make things feel feasible. And the amazing part: this enterprising pair did the entire thing while raising 7 kids. That’s inspiring right there.
Watch for their new show Nine by Design, coming to Bravo this Spring. I can’t WAIT.

Thanks to Robert and Courtney for graciously sending me a copy of their book to review.

I've read about this family in the NY Times. Looks like an interesting show.

The book looks amazing. Think I need a copy!

But how do you keep your child entertained while working from home? I've just started and I'm REALLY struggling…

HI Amanda!
It's rough.
Everyone always says they get their work done at night after the kids are in bed. I've had good luck working during naptimes.
She'll play on her own for a little while if I need to catch up on something quickly – it's best if we've been playing together first, then she's had my attention already and is willing to wander off on her own for a minute.
An understanding husband? That can help. (mine fits that description maybe 50% of the time)
And I'm getting even better at my list-making skills. Then I can prioritize.
