One of the more unusual aspects of being a toy designer for many years is the high volume of random toys I accumulated long before I became a mom. Like, 16 large bins filled to the brim. The summer before Birdie was born, I invited a long-suffering friend over for an afternoon of organizing and re-organizing (see the image below!). I was trying really hard to let go of some of the product that had been hiding under our stairs for years. But what actually happened? The extra toys just moved from one of many bins labeled “Keep for baby” (or keep for me!) to bins labeled “giveaway”. Funny. Considering I didn’t have any intention of hosting giveaways on a blog at the time, I think it’s a little eery.
But it’s good for you! I’m starting a new series of giveaways. Giveaways of discontinued product from the history of my much lauded, infamous, award winning career. Or, more realistically put: toys. Today’s giveaway includes two products I remember designing back in the last century, 1999. We had a wood factory in Victoria, BC that made all of the wooden toys using Canadian-sourced hardwoods. The dyes were natural and, of course, baby safe. It was all gorgeous product that I miss greatly, and the people making them cared so much about the toys they made. These two mini pull toys – (they’re about 5″ tall) are from a series of Tiny Tug Toys (name also by me, how original) with felt accents. Those felt bits are full of blood, sweat, and tears. They were produced in Hong Kong with a separate vendor. It was a surprisingly complicated process for us at the time: coordinating materials, production, timelines, and safety between two manufacturers who had never worked together or with the other’s materials before. I think I was even in Hong Kong to confirm some of the details. I miss that life sometimes. Then I remember the crazy hours, crazier meals (turtle head soup? no thanks) and the havoc to my body, and I’m a-ok.
The details: There will be two winners – one wins a frog, one wins a ladybug. These pull toys wobble when they roll, and their heads and feet rotate too. They include the original packaging, and are age-graded for 18 months and up. Please note: if you give this to a child under three you will need to cut off the shiny bell on the front (easy peasy). New toy testing standards make the bell unsafe for kids under 3.

very cute, as always, mari!
mmmm….my favorite toy as a kid is hard to say. i’d have to say art supplies in general. anything that allowed me to color, paint, etc. was awesome in my book.
Retweeted the giveaway. If I win, these toys might end up on my desk. Very cool stuff. To my chagrin, both my kids end up playing with Daddy’s “toys” aka my beloved Apple computer equipment anyway on my desk. Might as well have some cool toys as a worthwhile distraction.

Mari these are beautiful!
My favorite toy as a child was this large semi-truck (I was kind of a tomboy) as I could pack in as many little toys, dolls, odds ‘n ends in that thing as I wanted. Then I would have He-man and the villain of She-ra (the only black haired doll available in the 80s) cruise around on a cross-country vacation in our basement.
Stian seems to favor anything wooden… right now his favorite toy is literally a wooden dowel that he likes to drum on anything possible… I have a feeling we’re experiencing the beginning of a lifelong interest in building (one can hope!!)
Love, Sam & Stian
Wow, these are super cool, love to hear the stories behind production. Let’s go with my kids fave toys now. My 4 1/2 year old has a series of “tiny erasers” that are just that, little animal erasers about the size of 3 grains of rice. My 2 1/2 year old likes to steal them. My 4 1/2 year old likes to shout about it. My 2 1/2 year old will run away with them. And my 4 1/2 year old likes to scream about it. Then sometimes my 2 1/2 year old will put them in her mouth to be extra annoying. And my 4 1/2 year old will dissolve in a puddle of tears. And repeat. That, that, that is my life, right there. My favorite of their toys is the Plan Toys chalet dolls house, but it is apparently not half as thrilling as those **** tiny erasers.
Wow…favorite toy from childhood. I’m so ensconced in my own child’s childhood that it’s hard to think back that far… But one of my favorite toys wasn’t a “real” toy – the best kind. It was a collection of tiny aluminum off-cuts from some industrial process. They were rectangles of about 1/2″ x 3/4″ and they offered the opportunity to make almost endless variations – different geometric patterns and pathways and designs – that I would lay out on the floor. Hours of creative fun!
As a kid: My Legos…I still have them.
Now: My cameras
I tweeted about it
Mari—Why am I not at all surprised that you have collected sixteen bins of toys!? You have always had to love of unique cool things. (I still have my tea cup and saucer from 17 years ago (give or take!)
Tricia
Wow Tricia! I’m so happy to hear you still have the teacup and saucer. How can that be 17 years ago? Meanwhile, I still have that beautiful handmade wool scarf from you and your mom. Some objects just have such important stories to them, don’t they?
My kids favorite toys vary from day to day. They do lean towards anything dinosaur or elephant related including puzzles, figurines, and stuffed animals. My childhood favorite toys were my brothers vintage 70s collection of Six Million Dollar man, Star Wars and G.I. Joe toys respectively. Cool vehicles!
My favorite toy was a spirograph. I used to draw pattern, after pattern, then color in the open spaces with my neon-colored pens. Who knew that I was so analytical even as a kid! M- I’ve been a long-time RSS reader, pretty much since day one. **Fingers-crossed for the lady bug!
I always loved Strawberry Shortcake!
My favorite toy were the original Polly Pockets- they make them still, but they’re not exactly pocket size anymore!

My favorite toy when I was little was a stuffed Big Bird. I carried him around in the crook of my arm until his neck went limp.

my favorite toy when I was a kid was Barbies! I had tons of them and would play by myself for hours since I grew up with all boys!
My favorite toys were my Breyer horses. I played with them endlessly! My daughter’s current favorite toy is either her little basket with “laundry” ie cloth wipes, or her wooden push toy. Thanks for the chance – these look so adorable!

My son’s favorite toy is his push lawnmower.
Puzzles – loved them – still do
I loved Barbies… mainly to dress them up in all sorts of fun clothes! :D

Interesting giveaway. Without trying to give away my age *argh!* I’d have to say my favorite toy(s) were Tinker Toys. They were also wooden toys and I could just sit and build for hours. Especially if my brother played with me, we would just build these huge “things” I guess you could call them. Lots of fun and great memories.

My favorite toy growing up was probably my Cabbage Patch doll. I had one with cornsilk hair so I must of brushed her hair endlessly.
