oliver + s little things to sew review

Serendipity is a powerful thing. I was browsing amazing craft books on Amazon the other day (there’s just so many these days that it makes my head spin!) and I added Oliver + S Little Things to Sew to my wishlist. The next day? I’m offered a review copy from it’s publisher STC Craft/Melanie Falick Books. How could I possibly refuse? (and why would I want to?)

So. First things first. I’m not the best sewer, in fact there are definitely some very basic elements of sewing knowledge that I know nothing about. Therefore one of my first questions when reading a sewing book is: how thorough are the explanations? Liesl Gibson does not disappoint me, the instructions are clear, with diagrams for all of us visual learners, and step by steps leading us through the process. But of course, if you’re a master sewer, you can take the patterns, skim the instructions and go crazy. The book focuses on classic accessories and basic toys for kids. (though there are no dolls or true plushies in here, fyi) All of it is practical, thoughtful, and still with a hint of vintage and whimsy. Honestly, if I had the time I would probably try to make everything in the book, from the easy tutu and Red Riding Hood Cape to the Messenger bag and puppet theater.  You can peek at the beautiful photos of each project over at the STC Craft/Melanie Falick Books website. Lastly, I have to share the Designer Detail that I just LOVE! The book includes 2 paper dolls and the clothes from the book – ready to cut out and keep your kiddo occupied while you sew that first item!
