Crate and Barrel Pop Modern Retro Melamine Flower Plates for stylish kids

Have you noticed summer is the time when melamine just starts pouring out of the woodwork in all kinds of stores? Picnic season! And we all know melamine is a great option for the kiddos in your life. I’m gathering some of my favorites – from the megastores to the online faves.

Let’s start with the coolest ones, from dinner ware powerhouse: Crate and Barrel (shown above). I am really loving these mod AND modern floral plates – available in sets of four,or individually to suit your fancy. Crate and Barrel Pop Flower Plates, $5.95 each or a set of 4 for $19.95. Or, if you’re a minimalist, check out the square white melamine plates. Tres chic.

I’ve only nabbed a couple of examples from Target, but I’m sure you know where to look for the many many other options – Target devotes entire aisles to summer dining gear this time of year.

4-section divided striped melamine plate, in stores at Target, $4.99
Blue stripe melamine salad plate, in stores at Target, $1.79
Green patterned melamine salad plate. in stores at Target, $1.79

West Elm has some fun melamine options as well – with a more handmade, craft vibe to them. I think Birdie would particularly like the Bird set, of course.

Painter melamine plates, West Elm, $20 – $24
Bird melamine plates, West Elm, $20
Sunshine melamine plates, West Elm, $14.99 – $24

You can even find some basic solid color melamine plates for kids at Kmart and at Walmart. I’m particularly fond of the old school sectioned melamine plates by Coleman (shown above), $2.48 a piece.

And last but not least, check out my odds-on favorite, French Bull.

Fun! And I have one more source to add–do you know about Jane Jenni? She’s local (St Paul) and her melamine plates, cups, and other products are sold at lots of gift shops. Very fun “personalities” with a sense of humor, like party animal, sweet pea, cutie pie, love bug :-) janejenni.com

Oh my stars, how did I NOT know she was local? I absolutely adore her line – we have a couple of the “Early Bird” Plates for Birdie, because she is our very own Early Bird (5 weeks, to be exact!)
Jane Jenni may deserve her own post in the in future here at SfB – Thanks for the heads up Deb!

Great post! I love all the fun colours and patterns.

I came across a woman who designs personalized, “looks like me” melamine plates and bowls for kids. Not only can you order these items with your child’s name on it, but they also include a graphic likeness. Select their hairstyle, hair colour, eye colour, skin tone, glasses and freckles. I ordered a couple sets and they are awesome. Her company is called CHILDish (http://www.mychildish.com).

Here’s a link to my review of them, if you’re interested.
