1234 – making numbers for Birdie

DIY quick and easy no-sew felt handmade numbers for preschool learning and counting

When I was making our advent calendar, Birdie only wanted to play with the little paper numbers I made for each of the pockets. To keep her occupied, I drew a couple of numbers on felt scraps – and realized we had a new toy! So I cut up a bunch of that gorgeous 100% wool felt, and set to work. You’ll see in the video below that Birdie particularly enjoys sorting and counting them (out of order, of course!). Now we need to work on matching each number to the sound it makes. Scroll below the video for the details!

What we used:

  • 100% wool felt (it’s thicker and softer than polyester felt – though both would work)
  • Number Stencils
  • Sharpie markers

Some quick tips:
This is such an easy thing, I hesitate to give you the step by step, but this is what worked for us:

  • Size is completely arbitrary, these are about 1″ x 2″, but that’s because that was the height of the scrap I grabbed.
  • If you’ll be including double digits – make sure your felt pieces will fit them as well as the single digits!
  • I cut all the pieces first, then eyeballed the stencils on each one.
  • I originally tried some fabric markers, but because of the felt’s uneven surface, Sharpies were brighter and more saturated.

Do you think your kids would like these numbers? We also love putting them away in a little canvas pouch too!
