round about: neo geo food & a happy appy

by mari

This week's top links online include: appreciate app, LSD paintings, teaching kids in summer, geometric sandwich, butler overboots for kids, and Playtime trade Show

Two weeks ago I desperately tweeted: “I think I need a week off from my life so I can appreciate it more.” Then suddenly this week I got my chance.

My husband is out of town at a conference, and little Birdie spent the last two days with her Aunt doing fabulously fun things. I stayed home, rested, relaxed, read a book, and then busted out a bunch of freelance and blog writing. I’ll admit, the first day with no one around was liberating: there was NO SCHEDULE. I ate lunch at 2:30 because I could. I went to the grocery store during Birdie’s naptime. It was surreal and subversive and I loved it (that may sound really odd to non-parents!).

But by the end of the second day I realized something. Well, a lot of somethings. But some of the highlights: there was no one to talk to, no one to hug, no one to giggle with. And with no one else depending on and/or supporting me, I was completely adrift. So. Yes, I’m much more appreciative of my real life and my family after 2 days on my own. I guess I gave up my Ms. Independent side many years ago without even knowing it. Do other parents feel this way?

Meanwhile, round about the internet this week:

  • I love simple apps with simple uses: @ppreciate, via Swiss Miss
  • Paint some molecules: Kelsey Brookes via The Fox is Black
  • Hands-on fun summer learning: Happy Family Habits via Modern Parents Messy Kids
  • I think the tribal geometric trend has gone too far: Sandwich via Designspiration
  • Overboots never looked this good – and for kids: Butler Overboots via NotCot
  • Some Playtime (the tradeshow) goodies: via Paul & Paula

With 3 children and a full time job I think I understand that need of a week off your life…But I also have notice that now I depend upon my family, maybe more that they depend on me. But I do really appreciate the rare moments of solitude!!

Yes! I think in the end it’s important to have some of both: life balance!

Oh lunch at 2:30? Errands during nap time? I guess I need a break pretty bad too because that sounds down right thrilling! I’m so glad you got to recharge and feel grateful once more.

I know right? Thrilling is the right word! Thanks Carla, it was definitely worth it – a day where I made all of the decisions just for me (or no decisions at all).

The girls been away this week to her first sleep away camp (at7 1/2!) and while it’s been lovely, I miss our little family being together. Pick her up tomorrow!
