DIY: yarn star ornaments

DIY Star Ornaments - Holiday Craft - Hand Made with Yarn and Pom-poms

We made these this weekend and I love how they turned out. My vision of sitting with my girls by the fire, joyously wrapping pipe cleaners with yarn, was interrupted by reality. It snowed! So while the kids built sled ramps and threw snowballs at each other, I sat by the fire alone and made these guys. Alone by the fire…yes, it was heavenly! And the yarn wrapping was quite therapeutic. I highly recommend this activity for stress relief.

Supplies:

Pipe cleaners

Star cookie cutter

Yarn

Tape

Pom-pom maker (optional)

Directions:

Start by wrapping the pipe cleaner around the cookie cutter to make the shape. (This would work well with heart or tree cookie cutters, too!) Then tape the two end together.

Next, chose your yarn. Ombre yarn works great because it’s already multi-colored. But if you want to make up your own color combo, then just cut about a foot of each color and attach with a knot. Or go with a single color!

Now comes the fun part…wrapping the yarn around the shape! It’s easiest if you wind your yarn piece (about 4 feet) in a ball in order to pass it through the middle each time. This wrapping process will take about half an hour. When finished, tie a double knot.

Make your pom-pom…or don’t. I think it’s cute without and would look so sweet as a gift topper. But we did pom-poms and I love them! We used a pom-pom maker, but you can make them any way you like. Here is a good tutorial on using your fingers.

When trimming your pom-pom, leave one string long to tie onto your star. Triple knot everything. Add a loop at the top for hanging. And you’re done!

I can’t decide if I’m hanging these on our tree, or giving them away. They would make great hostess and teacher gifts. Either way, I loved making these and now I want to try different shapes. I hope you try these too, and are more successful recruiting the kids!

Hi,I made a wreath and found the yarn winding a little boring, could you wind the yarn around the pipe cleaners first and then make in to star shape? I will have a go at these though they are quite charming! Best Regards G.

I think that would work – you might see the pipe cleaner peeking through where you bend it, but I bet you could push the yarn around to cover it up. Good luck!
