Birdie’s school has a no-candy rule when it comes to Valentine’s day, and I love it. Every year we use it as an opportunity to make something a little extra special for all of her friends in her class. This year, we’re combining my printable valentines with some retro-inspired pom pom creatures. They’re like pom pom monsters with a an added dose of aaaaaaw. I upgraded them a bit with gorgeous cotton pompoms and wool felt, I couldn’t help myself! The great news is, Birdie, at 5 years old, is able to do all the assembly by herself.
Take a peek at my favorite, her robot alien butterfly, at the bottom of the post!
What you’ll need:
- Pom Poms – any kind will do, but I love these 35 mm cotton pom poms
- Felt – if you can, try some wool felt
- Half round 4mm black eyes or googly eyes
- Silver Tinsel Stems, or other pipe cleaners
- Glue – we actually used Elmer’s white glue with great success
What you’ll do:
- Cut out lots of hearts!
- Gather all your materials, and decide what animal you’d like to make.
- Experiment with the placement of things before you get out the glue!
- Tip: we poured out some glue on scrap paper and used toothpicks dipped in the glue to place the small eyes.
