the best surprise gifts for mom

PIgment and Palette subscription box service - art supplies

There is just no time to pick out and suggest the perfect little something for Mother’s Day this year. Besides, it always feels so strange giving someone a list of what they should give you. They should just know the most wonderful thing ever and hand it to you – telling them takes all the fun out of it! But, let’s be honest. If we left it up to our husbands, the entire process is hit or miss. I think I might have the answer for you.

Subscription boxes are a huge business these days – you can find everything from the fishing lure of the month to the yarn of the month. But there are a couple of really awesome subscription services that are perfect for most of the moms I know. In fact, if I could, I’d subscribe to each one of these and have boxes of curated goodies delivered every week of the year! And as a gift idea, they’re perfect: you know you’ll like them, and yet what’s actually in them is still a surprise!

(above)Pigment + Palette, $15/month
This new subscription (started in December 2013) has me super excited – a collection of 4-5 art supplies will arrive in a reusable magnetic box. It includes a postcard from a featured artist each month, with some full-size products as well as some samples to let you experience new materials. It’s so much fun for all kinds of creative types.

whimseybox

Whimseybox, $15/month
You may have heard of Whimseybox, they’re a pretty big DIY player. Get a complete DIY project every month, with a reusable box and a 5″x7″ art print to boot. I love the idea that everything you need to make a project is collected together for you.

forthemakers

For the Makers, $29/month
Touted as a little more special and “runway” than your average DIY kit, each box contains 4 different DIY projects with tips and tricks to personalize your look.  The sample projects on their site are all gorgeous and unique. I’m totally sold.

stitchfix1

Stitch Fix, price varies
This is my new obsession. With no commitments beyond a reimbursable $20 stylist’s fee, you get 5 personalized picks delivered only when you want them. You can sign up monthly if you want to, but it’s totally up to you. The personalized style profile is the best I’ve seen – with enough questions to really get a sense of who you are, and lots of room for personal comments. Send all 5 pieces back at no charge (beyond your $20 stylist’s fee), or credit that fee towards whatever you choose to purchase and keep. My picks were spot on and pushed my limits at the same time, which is exactly what I need. I LOVE this service. I love it even more than going shopping – which is really saying something.

birchbox-style

Birchbox, $10/month
I’m the girl who loves Sephora because of the 3 measly samples I get with every order. But with Birchbox, you get 5 deluxe or full size samples for only $10 including shipping. So much fun packed into a little box – you can personalize your picks with their beauty profile too. So everything you get will be something worth using!

There. Now I have all your gift-giving issues solved, just send this list to everyone you love, lean back, and wait for those pretty boxes to arrive!
