I have been fascinated with mobiles since I was a kid. I remember the first time I saw Alexander Calder’s work in person – back in grade school – and being absolutely mesmerized. He developed the most amazing mobiles, and many of the modern mobiles you see now use similar balancing techniques and sometimes the same forms. I’m so excited that I finally get to design my own.
Let me introduce you to the latest Smallful product: the In the Clouds Mobile. You guys. I think I made 6 different versions of this to get it right. I was surprised how quickly pieces of paper could change the weighting and balance of each piece! Every time I thought I had it solve, something else was suddenly out of whack. But I’m proud to say that I persevered and finally have a balanced mobile for you to download, print, and create on your own.
First, let me say this is a project for older kids and grown ups – it will frustrate the heck out of a 5 year old. The key to making your own mobile: start at the bottom and work your way up. This mobile comes with detailed instructions – and the first thing you do is build your clouds. Then you can begin attaching them to the arms and building your mobile. Stop by Smallful and download your own In the Clouds Mobile – I bet you can have it printed and ready to make right away!
