There are iPad games that I put up with, and then their iPad games that I simply adore.
Lumino City is in the latter category – an amazing game that will challenge you and your kids to mind-teasers and exploration, while looking absolutely stunning at the same time. Lumi has lost her Grandpa, the handyman of Lumino City. So she sets off to find him, solving puzzles and problems around the town – handyman style, with some hints from the game, the local towns people, and a very thick manual book full of sly how-to’s when needed.
The game was actually made first in paper and props – not on a computer! It shows in the rich colors and textures, and the bright shadows. It gives it so much more weight than if it was just computer animated. Lumino City’s puzzles are hard, but not so hard that Birdie – at 6 1/2 yo – can’t figure some of them out on her own (others are definitely team efforts). But the joy of this game isn’t only in seeing her solve her own puzzles: we’ve been playing the game together! I just love that we can be a team exploring the city, solving puzzles together, and coming up with solutions. I also love seeing her brain work through things – I always end up thinking, wow, she’s smarter than I give her credit for!
