Mary Blair flair

by mari

While at our favorite old-timey toy store, Lark Toys (a must for the carousel), I grabbed my daughter’s first classic (reprint) Golden Book, “I Can Fly”. It was totally on a whim. Turns out I love reading it to her – not because of the story (though it’s nice and short when we’re low on energy!) but because of the illustrations. I never realized reading to my baby would be so inspirational! Mary Blair had a long history with Golden Books and with Disney. I just spent an hour online and found some really great links to her illustrations on Flickr. Also, the Hollywood Animation Archive has some great scans of her books: Baby House, Little Verses Part One and Part Two.
Meanwhile, I now want this Alice In Wonderland book featuring her original concept illustrations for the Disney Movie.
