Dear St. Valentine. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with you and your silly holiday (all puns intended). If Hallmark hadn’t co-opted it as their big fat cause celebe, perhaps I’d feel differently. Instead I find myself wading – every year – through a sea of reds, pinks, and sweets to find something that honors my chance to yell to the rafters how much I care about someone, without suffocating them in roses and hearty hearts.
I saw My Heart is Like a Zoo, by Michael Hall, last weekend at the bookstore – it jumped into my hands because it’s such a fresh, graphic change from so many of the childrens books out there. I love the look of it. Plus, it’s a unique approach to a Valentine’s gift, if you might be looking for that sort of thing. It’s not red, or pink, or frilly.You know what’s even cooler?
