moving backwards – movies to books

kid-o animal homes wooden book

(Fellow parents will find this apropos, I’m typing this on top of the changing table. It’s the only place Birdie can’t reach me, while  keeping us near her massive toy pile)

Happy June everyone! We spent our weekend with the in-laws, and I think it must have been one of the hottest Memorial weekends on record for us. 90 degrees? In May? Birdie got a full-on taste of humidity, sunshine, sunscreen, and probably a couple of bugs (literally). Meanwhile I found a book for her that I’d been eyeing for some time now. Kid-O makes these gorgeous wooden books. Pardon me while I wax design poetic. The finish on the wood is this perfect satin, which somehow causes the screenprinted images to appear to be floating on the surface. It’s a subtle thing that takes these already amazingly minimal graphics right over the edge of cool into awesome. Luckily the Rochester Art Center provided me with the opportunity to nab one. (Great little gift shop, and the small selection of artist books from Minnesota Artists is stellar).

Beyond that, I wanted to share my obsession with my iPhone camera and this super cool old movie theater turned bookstore. I kind of can’t believe it’s actually a Barnes and Noble (located in Rochester, MN). Though they turned the large space into two stories, they kept the original entry: including the ticket booth and the crazy Swiss-ish decorations, as well as the castle-themed archway over the stage. We love this place, and try to get there every time we’re in Rochester. But the perfect ending to our weekend? Our drive home. It came complete with a wicked summer storm that turned the whole sky orange, and ended with a double rainbow. Now that’s the way to bring in June.

(Ok, this changing table thing is not so cool. My back is killing me …)
