the best of SfB #2

It’s that magical, timeless week between Christmas and New Year’s. Though I will be happily taking a mini-blog-vacation, it’s the perfect time of year to look at some of the top posts from Small for Big this past year. Let’s count them down this week, shall we?

The 2nd most popular post: Chronicle Books $500 giveaway
[no surprise right? Lucky for you this list of books is still amazing, even if you can’t win it!]

Ooooo-eeeeee do we have a great start to the week today!

Chronicle Books, in all of their infinite wisdom, endless grace, and market savvy, is doing a bumper crop of a giveaway for all of us. I’ve created the list of my favorite children’s books, independent books, art books, and some other flotsam and jetsam. The total value? $500.

If you comment on this post? You have a chance to win ALL OF THEM. Yep.

(and the secret best part? I have a chance to win all of them as well. Joy to the World for BOTH of us!)

To win: Add your comment to the end of this post about your current favorite children’s book (keep scrolling, there are lots of books to win in this list!). Chronicle Books will choose one blog and one commenter on that blog to be the lucky winners of the entire list. The last day to add your comment is December 10.

Without further ado, here are the best books for kids and for crafty arty types (from left to right top to bottom in the above image)

Kids Books:

Magical Menagerie – I’ve wanted to feature these for some time, I kept forgetting! This is my perfect chance to tell you that we all have to get these. No glue, lots of adorable animals, and 3D results! $24.95

Little Pea – Apparently if he doesn’t eat all his sweets, he won’t get his vegetables for dessert. My Birdie needs to hear this, stat. $14.99

MoMA Modern Play House – Because I already featured it, so it’s obvious that I love it.

Rosie Flo’s Coloring Book – Ever since I saw this book I’ve been eyeing it for Birdie’s future, when she can appreciate the adorableness of it’s simplicity and charm. $8.09

A Long Piece of String – A classic kids book reissued hits all my right buttons. $15.99

alphabeasties flash cards – because typography is beautifull, and these cards take that and run with it. Plus, they convert to 2 floor puzzles on the backside. $15.99

Christmas with Rita and Whatsit – This precocious little girl and unnamed dog duo has me very curious. $14.99

Lines that Wiggle – I always like it when a kids book plays with an artistic thang and makes it the story. Like this line that wiggles! $.14.99

Big Rabbit’s Bad Mood – Well, we’ve hit the terrible twos. I need books that explain that for me (oh yeah, and for my toddler). $16.99

Bibs to Go – a tablet of brightly colored disposable bibs? Since I always forget to pack one, this is a new necessity. $12.99

Just One Bite – Life size illustrations of animals eating their favorite food! $17.99

Other Goose – by the amazing J. Otto Siebold retold and re-rhymed tales $19.99

Art Books:

The Exquisite Book – 100 Artists Play a Collaborative Game. I love the early 20th century art game, The Exquisite Corpse, and this book asks some wonderful artists to try their hand. I need me the inspiration. $29.95

Manufractured Identity – This is for my serious side, the one that once made art and hopes to get back to it, maybe when Birdie goes off to college or turns 50 or something? I’m so behind, I need this book to kick me in the rear. $35

Handmade Nation – A book all about that thing we love, from a slightly intellectual frame of mind, my favorite kind! $.24.95

DIY Books:

Sukie Iron-On Craft Pad – For those days when you want to be crafty but aren’t feeling very inspired? Sukie’s got you covered and your Tshirts too. $14.95
Paper and Craft – Because I’m kind of addicted to books about crafty bits and bobs. $19.95

Lotta Jansdotter’s Handmade Living – Yep, more crafty sewy goodness. $29.95

Creative Inc. – Because I hear this is the bible for small indie craftie business runners. Which I aspire to be one day. $16.95

And more unusual books:

Bird Songs Bible – This may be overkill for my very amateur bird interests, but recordings of over 750 birds, for a daughter named Wren and the mom who named her? Pretty Damn Priceless. $125
