Mini Mole Handmade micro art toy from etsy

Our week has disappeared in a haze of a broken satellite TV receiver, a broken dishwasher, a kid with a cold, and several dreary cloudy afternoons. I think it’s probably a good thing that it’s Friday.
The highlight of the week, by far, was going to Birdie’s new Montessori school for a Parent’s Education Night. We learned about Sensorial Materials, and if I wasn’t a Montessori convert before I can tell you I sure as heck am now. Everything they do is so focused on honing in on one sense (sight, taste, etc.) and learning through it, then building from one to another. Each step of each thing they do relates to a bigger goal – like learning to write, or learning math. And I Swear To You, in 2 weeks Birdie has already changed in subtle but wonderful ways. Like, she’s much more likely to want to put her things away when she’s done with them. And I swear she’s listening more closely – with more interest – when I explain new things to her. It was wonderful to spend the night learning what she’s doing and what she will be doing in the coming years. But it was even cooler to see how dedicated and excited the teachers are. I’m so comforted knowing that I’m completely satisfied with the school we’ve found for our little smarty pants. Where are you on the road to school? Are you happy with the school your kids are in?

This week’s links around the web:

  • (image above) Something about this silly little Action Mole makes me feel like cooing. Could it be those mint green socks?
  • Minikin’s Madame Monsieur Necklace no. 1 is so dang cute, I may buy two and actually go matchy matchy with Birdie. (I forgot where I saw this originally, fellow blogger, I apologize!)
  • Speaking of Montessori, I’ve just found this blog, Lasso the Moon, and am excited to see what projects they feature next. For now, I will definitely be plotting a plantable DIY sunflower house in our yard for next summer.
  • I will have to update our little library to include almost all of the books on LMNOP’s 25 under 5 reading list. Because come on, who isn’t up for new books?!
  • Loving the concept behind Tukluk’s large magnetic triangles that build whatever large thingamajig you might want. Found via Baby Gadget. They’re expensive, which begs the question … DIY?!
  • With the return of grey skies, we’ve been getting back into our crafty sides this week. I think next up may be this quick tutorial for less-mess DIY glue paint. I know Birdie will be obsessed with the squeezing action. via Momtastic.

Thanks for the link-up! We are working hard to “keep the light burning” in our girls’ eyes. As parents of young children we have a tough road ahead of us with our educational system. I am very thankful to meet parents online who are willing to share, work together and help one another.

I worry about the future for Birdie’s education too, so I’m always excited to find a resource that can help me support her. Keep it up!

It’s helpful knowing the kinds of toys that are available for children at this type of school. Are they geared towards educational or recreational goals?

Montessori schools really don’t have “toys” as we think of them. Not like those in the toy aisle at Target. Instead children work with items that are simple or familiar to them (kitchen things, coloring, painting, bells, wooden blocks, etc.) so that imagination and self-exploration are key. You should look up more about Maria Montessori and her methods to get a better sense of things!
