Birdie Learns to Fly Children's Book - with Blurb.com

Do you remember that little sneak peek I gave you last week? It’s time for the big reveal! I finally finished writing and illustrating my first children’s book: Birdie Learns to Fly. This is a project I’ve been wanting to work on for years. Luckily, the leaps and bounds in technology have made it easy to create a book and see it published too. I used Blurb’s software, which I’ve always loved (we have some amazing photo books of Birdie’s first year thanks to them too, now I just have to catch up with years 2,3, and 4!). Even better, they’re an Alt Summit sponsor, and offered all attendees a free book. It was the perfect time to try out my ideas.

Birdie Learns to Fly is the story of little Birdie, who has decided today she will learn to fly. The only problem is that, like most kids, she thinks she’ll be able to do it without any practice. My daughter is always telling me she already knows how to do things. Unfortunately reality makes it clear that the knowledge she thinks she has is theoretical at best. The story continues through her various attempts and frustrations, learning from her mom that you must “Try again to try, then you will learn to fly!”. In the end, she finds success, but not in the way she expects! Read the whole book online at Blurb!

Wow! That is so good, you are really good at writing AND illustrating. Seriously…I know how hard that can be. Congratulations!! Your daughter will cherish this forever and someday she will share it with her own kids. It’s a treasure, you should be so proud.

My goodness, thank you so much!
I agree, even if it’s never more than a blurb book, my daughter is already so proud of having a book that I wrote just about her, and now she wants to make her own too. That’s pretty priceless!

Love your illustrations! We are writing a book at our school describing positive behavior. I am doing the illustrations (which is taking FOREVER :-) Yours look so “perfect”. Did you use a computer program or the old pen and ink?!

That’s wonderful!
I used both actually. I did the drawings first in pencil, then scanned them in and added the color with Photoshop. Best of both worlds! (and easy to fix little drawing mistakes too!)
