For Just One Day

“For just one day, I’d like to be a busy buzzing, bumble … bee.” Like any semi-smarty-pants parent, I’m so proud of the fact that Birdie loves books. Loves them. I can hand her printed material of any variety (Dad’s random free auto magazine, the target ad, and of course, any actual book) and she will toddle off with it, sit down, and calmly page through the pages. And, for the most part, she doesn’t even chew on those pages anymore. Birdie’s latest cute book habit: she knows just which book she wants me to read before nap time. I can pull out several other books to look at, but she will push me out of the way, and stretch a pointed finger to the shelf until I grab the right one. Though that “Right One” varies, these last two weeks it’s been For Just One Day (and yeah, it’s one of my favorites too).

Laura Leuck’s words bounce off the tongue – a true test of a good children’s book is the joy I find when reading it! The story follows several kids as they pick the animal they’d like to be. And the ending with the real mirror is super sweet. However, I first grabbed it for the illustrations by Marc Boutavant (a.k.a. Mouk). A little retro, irreverant, and sophisticated all at once, his work has inspired my own many times. Here’s hoping this book can inspire your reading time as well.
