There’s nothing better than playing with cool, smooshy, messy, smelly play dough. Whether it’s homemade dough, fancy modeling clay, or the smells-like-childhood Play Doh we all grew up with, it’s all worth it. Playing with clay is one of those visceral experiences that makes everybody smile.
So when I got the chance to help Play Doh with some holiday-themed crafts and activities, of course I jumped at it! This is just one of the projects we came up with, but I have to say it may be my favorite. I think it’s because the design itself is so simple, but the possibilities and the growth are almost endless.
Making snowflakes with toothpicks and Play Doh is really easy. Just make small balls of dough, and stick toothpicks into them. Start with a center ball, and place 6 toothpicks into it, radiating out like a star. Then keep adding balls of clay and extra toothpicks. Feel free to decorate them as you go – add extra balls of dough, or make different shapes for the centers. Grow the snowflakes as big as you’d like – they grow just like the ice crystals of a real snowflake or the ones that creep across your window panes.
